Greenbuild 2009

Just returned from Phoenix, AZ where I attended the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo.   The conference is organized by the United States Green Building Council.   Attendance was somewhere between 25,000 and 30,000 people, by far the largest conference that I have attended.   With so much going on it is difficult to choose what to report so I will limit it to my thoughts on the educational sessions I attended and what I saw in the Exhibitor’s Hall.

Naturally my interest in the education sessions had to do with glass products and glazing systems.   What I saw on the Exhibit Hall floor was windows and glass galore.   All of it was leading edge stuff.   High performance glass and windows for both hot and cold climates.   Energy efficiency is right at the top of what the glass and window manufacturer’s are producing.   I was surprised at the amount of window shading exhibits.   Window shades with translucent and light allowing patterns and densities of all kinds were on display.   These shades encourage the use of clear glass to allow as much direct and indirect lighting as possible in a home of commercial building.   The more daylight “borrowed” indirectly from a window the better. Daylighting reduces the number of lights that might normally be used indoors.

In my next posting I will discuss what I heard on marketing and consumer values related to “going green”.
