Is buying from a locally owned business important?

Monday, June 18th, 2012 | posted by: Chip

On two recent occasions on social media sites I polled readers to find out if  purchasing from a locally owned business was important.  Of the 15 responses received 13 said they would buy local if convenient, 1 said price was the consideration and 1 said it was not important at all.  Admittedly this is a small sampling of views but 86% said it was important.

This would seem to be good news for us local business owners but I am not so sure that when the moment to purchase comes around that consumers follow their response.  How else can you explain the the many cries of anguish from local business owners who feel that business seems to go to the national companies or regional chains?  Purchasing decisions are complicated and are made for many different reasons ranging from price, customer service, convenience, availability, quality of product, and perhaps 24/7 on-line shopping.

What is important to you?  I would like to hear from you if you feel like responding.  Contact me at chip.merritt@merrittglass.com.
